What exactly is a mantra? And why are the important and beneficial to endurance athletes? According to dictionary.com, a Mantra is: an often repeated word, formula, or phrase, often a truism.
Very popular in eastern religions, mantra's are a word, phrases or sounds repeated to aid concentration in meditation.
They can even be as simple as a sentimental statement or slogan repeated frequently.
Many athletes and successful sports professionals use mantras to give them a mental edge and keep them focused on their goal or task at hand.
The true value of a mantra to endurance athletes, comes when it is audible, visible, and/or in your thoughts.
The key to successful racing and getting through hard training days shared by many Olympians is to have your own personal mantras.
Mantra's are often affirmations to motivate and inspire you to be your best self.
Simply it's a positive phrase or statement that you use to affirm the way you want to succeed, achieve a training goal or achieve a racing accomplishment in your life.
It is the ultimate training hack that every athlete should adopt for training and racing success.
Making your Own Empowerment Mantras For Running, Cycling & Triathlon Success
In my experience, the mantras that work the best, are personal, positive, short, and action-oriented.
They should help you flip the switch on those negative feelings swirling in your head and through your body.
Tip: If you are writing your own to help you focus on what you want - avoid words that highlight what you are trying to avoid or are experiencing in real life.
Bad Example: Don't be so slow
Better Example: Forward is a motion
I think a great mantra(s) should be short, easy to remember, and a trigger for positive energy or your desired outcome.
Using powerful mantras when you are training for your next running, cycling, duathlon or triathlon race or endurance event, will prepare you for overcoming race day adversity.

At our last Fun Club meeting the question of having personal mantras came up in conversation -it was asked if any of us had mantra's that we relied on while training and racing.
It was no shocker when every hand was raised! The average endurance athlete shared that they each had at least two.
Here is a list of our team's 50 Motivational Empowerment Mantra's used for running, cycling, triathlon and duathlon training & racing.
